I wasn’t planning to buy anything that morning.
I had stopped at a small neighborhood yard sale while driving home. There were old dishes, children’s toys, clothes, and several boxes filled with books.
I usually don’t pay much attention to old books, but one particular hardcover caught my eye.
It was worn and dusty, with a dark brown cover and no picture on the front.
I picked it up and opened it.
There was a handwritten name inside the cover, followed by a date from decades ago.
For some reason, I couldn’t put it down.
I paid a few dollars for it and took it home.
That evening, I was sitting on the couch when a small piece of folded paper slipped from between the pages.
I assumed it was an old receipt.
I unfolded it.
There were only a few handwritten words:
“If you found this book, don’t open the envelope.”
I actually smiled.
It seemed like something someone had written as a joke.
Then I turned the next few pages.
That’s when I noticed a thin envelope tucked inside the back of the book.
My first thought was to leave it alone.
Of course, I didn’t.
I carefully opened it.
Inside was an old black-and-white photograph.
It showed a family standing in front of a small house.
There were two adults and three children.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten date:
July 14, 1968.
Underneath it was another sentence:
“This was the last day we were all together.”
I stared at that sentence for a long time.
Who were these people?
Why had the photograph been hidden inside the book?
And why would someone specifically write a warning telling whoever found it not to open the envelope?
I decided to search the name I’d found inside the book.
After a few minutes, I found an old newspaper archive mentioning a family with the same last name.
The article was from the late 1960s.
I won’t lie—I felt a strange chill when I realized the family had lived in the same town where I’d bought the book.
The next day, curiosity got the better of me.
