The Millionaire Appeared in the Doorway
Still holding the documents, the young woman turned around. The millionaire was standing in the doorway of the study.
He was alive, fully awake, and calm. There was no confusion in his expression and no sign that he had arrived unexpectedly.
His presence suggested that the open safe may not have been an accident. Whether he had deliberately left it unsecured or simply anticipated that she would search it, he was prepared for the moment.
The bride realized she had been caught reading the very document that exposed her secret intentions. There was no believable explanation for why she had entered the study, opened the folder, and searched through his will.
The elderly man looked at her with the same controlled attention that had once made her believe he was completely enchanted by her.
Then he confronted her directly.
“Did you really think I wouldn’t notice?” he said quietly.
