A Candle and a Wish
From his pocket, he carefully removed a small candle he had saved.
He placed it gently into a piece of bread on his tray and shielded it with one hand.
Then he lit the candle.
The tiny flame flickered softly in front of him.
He closed his eyes for a moment and made a wish.
It was not for wealth or grand success.
It was simply to see the people he loved again, even for a short time.
He leaned forward and blew out the candle.
The Room Fell Silent
When he opened his eyes, the room felt different.
Many people had stopped talking. Others had paused their meals.
Several were looking in his direction.
The man felt embarrassed and reached toward the candle, thinking he should put it away.
Before he could move it, one person slowly stood up.
Then another stood.
Then another.
An Unexpected Celebration
One by one, people began walking toward his table.
The man watched quietly, unsure of what would happen next.
Then an older man smiled gently and said:
“Happy birthday, brother.”
Another voice repeated the greeting.
Then several more joined in.
Within moments, the room filled with warm voices as people began singing a birthday song together.
Some tapped lightly on the tables in rhythm. Others raised cups of water in a cheerful gesture.
The song was not perfect, but it was sincere.
