Supreme Court RULES — Hakeem Jeffries Will Now Be …See more

Hakeem Jeffries is a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York.

He has served as House Democratic leader, making him one of the most influential figures in congressional politics.

His position gives him a central role in shaping Democratic strategy in the House, negotiating legislation, communicating the party’s priorities, and responding to the Republican majority.

Because of his position, Jeffries frequently appears in national political news.

However, being House Democratic leader is not the same thing as being Speaker of the House.

The Speaker is elected by the full House of Representatives.

That distinction becomes particularly important when reading sensational headlines suggesting that Jeffries has suddenly been elevated to another position.

The Supreme Court and Congress Have Different Roles

The United States government is structured around separate branches.

Congress makes federal laws.

The executive branch administers and enforces those laws.

The judiciary interprets the Constitution and federal law in cases properly brought before the courts.

The Supreme Court therefore has tremendous authority, but it does not function as a congressional personnel office.

It does not ordinarily decide who becomes House Speaker.

That decision belongs to the House itself.

This doesn’t mean Supreme Court decisions cannot affect congressional leadership.

They can.

A ruling involving elections, congressional districts, constitutional procedures, or the powers of federal institutions could have political consequences.

But a court decision and a congressional leadership election are fundamentally different processes.
